At 2:00 p.m. on March 20, a number of Hong Kong residents in exile in El Monte, Los Angeles County, jointly launched the “Law Protection Campaign”, announcing three demands: urging the Chinese Communist Party to abide by the Sino-British Joint Declaration and the Basic Law; implementing dual universal suffrage for the Chief Executive and legislators and promoting democratic reform; and repealing the Hong Kong “National Security Law” and amending the election bill.

Zheng Cunzhu, a long-time law-related activist in Los Angeles, said, “Hong Kong is not just a Hong Kong for Hong Kong people; Hong Kong is a city with the status of democracy, freedom and rule of law in Chinese society, and is the ‘Pearl of the Orient’ to which all Chinese people aspire, and we all expect the demonstration of democracy in Hong Kong to lead China mainland.” So when the people of Hong Kong took to the streets in protest, many Chinese democrats were encouraged. He believes that the Chinese Communist Party’s attempts to control Hong Kong in a dictatorial manner have sparked international public opinion, while making more and more Chinese people aware of the need to stand up in solidarity with Hong Kong.

Mr. Leung, one of the founders of the “Law Protection Campaign” in Hong Kong, said, “I’m very happy to be able to express our views on the Chinese Communist Party in the United States.” He lamented that if he were in Hong Kong, he might not even have the freedom to be interviewed by the media. Hong Kong people can only obey the Central Government of the CCP, and if they give interviews in public in Hong Kong, they may be arrested by the police for “illegal assembly”.

As we all know, more than a hundred years ago, Dr. Sun Yat-sen twice launched the “Law Protection Campaign” to defend the Provisional Constitution of the Republic of China, and this time, Hong Kong people also launched the “Law Protection Campaign”, hoping that the Chinese Communist Party would abide by the Sino-British Joint Declaration signed by itself and fulfill its promise at that time.

Another campaign promoter, Mr. Zhu, said, “It’s really ironic that now Hong Kong people have to defend their laws and demand that the government obey them.” Because of his work, Mr. Zhu knows many Hong Kong deputies to the National People’s Congress and members of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. He said, “The so-called ‘patriots’ who rule Hong Kong are actually ‘party lovers’ who rule Hong Kong. These people are not patriots, they love RMB, and none of one is truly patriotic.”

Mr. Zhu said that after the return of Hong Kong in 1997, Hong Kong’s health insurance had a lot of problems, public hospitals did not have the funds to purchase new equipment, and many civilians did not have the money to operate, he said, “they have passed away when queuing up for their turn.” But the royalists (Hong Kong pro-establishment), who do not know the plight of the people, can go to private hospitals when they are sick and fly abroad for treatment if necessary, so where would they be concerned about people’s livelihood.

Mr. Zhu believes that Hong Kong’s parliament has completely lost its original intention and many motions are exploiting the people. Recently, the Chief Executive in Council has passed the fare increase applications of four bus companies, which adds to the misery of Hong Kong people’s life. Mr. Zhu said, “from next month, the bus to increase prices by 8.5%-12%, those MPs in and out with drivers, some people have a plane, simply do not need to take the subway, take the bus, do not know the impact of price increases on the public.” He hopes that the CCP government will allow Hong Kong to implement “genuine dual universal suffrage”, so that true patriots and lovers of Hong Kong can govern Hong Kong and let Hong Kong people make their voices heard.

The “Law Protection Campaign” will send an appeal letter to the CCP government to seek the greatest consensus to solve the Hong Kong issue and maintain Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability; at the same time, it will call on more Hong Kong people who are continuously concerned about Hong Kong overseas or in exile to join the movement; it will appeal to Hong Kong legislators at both levels to seek recognition as representatives of public opinion in Hong Kong, and will propose a motion to the legislature to solve the Hong Kong issue.

Dennis, a Hong Kong resident who has immigrated to the U.S. for many years, said, “The Chinese Communist Party is afraid of spreading its family scandal, so we have to continue to speak up for Hong Kong people overseas, so that the world will know about Hong Kong’s problems and draw international attention.” He believes that it is now impossible for the international community to clean up its own snow, and that everyone realizes that the Chinese Communist Party can cause a lot of harm.

A new immigrant from the mainland who participated in the Hong Kong march in 2019 also went to support the Hong Kong “Law Protection Campaign”. He said he was harassed by the CCP police after just posting a few photos of the march in his WeChat moments and talking about Hong Kong topics. He knows firsthand the fear of Hong Kong people and feels sad for the Chinese, and hopes that the problems in Hong Kong will be solved soon.
