It is no secret that the Chinese Communist Party uses various means to infiltrate all aspects of the United States and other Western countries. A recent investigative report by Bloomberg further reveals that Beijing has used the technology supply chain to conduct a long-term spying campaign against the United States.

Bloomberg reported that U.S. investigators found that products made by Super Micro Computer Inc. had been tampered with malicious code hidden on the startup program chip, leading to the theft of U.S. data and its transmission to China.

In 2010, the U.S. Department of Defense discovered that thousands of computer servers were sending military network data to China, attributed to code hidden in a chip that handled the computer’s boot process; in 2014, Intel Corp. discovered that an elite CCP hacking group had compromised the company’s network through a server with malware downloaded from a vendor’s update site; and in 2015, the FBI warned several companies that CCP operators had hidden an additional chip containing backdoor code in one manufacturer’s servers.

The Bloomberg article points out that all of these attacks point to the CCP and Supermicro; and on the US side, intelligence experts have done extensive secrecy on the investigation in order to further understand and counter the manipulative capabilities of the CCP.
