On the first day of Lunar New Year, despite the celebrations, riot police fired tear gas canisters near Langham Place in Mong Kok. Although some food was contaminated with the chemicals released from the canisters, it didn’t seem to deter the food hawkers or shoppers, with many still busy patronizing nearby hawkers.

Throughout the night, makeshift eateries set up by street food hawkers were filled with citizens coming for a snack. However, while citizens were enjoying their night, riot police hoisted the black flag and prepared to fire another barrage of tear gas canisters onto the busy streets that were still teeming with people.
