On the 15th of January, the U.S Department of State issued a fact sheet regarding activity at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). The article firstly clarified that the U.S government has not yet determined the origin of the COVID-19 virus. They could not yet answer whether the virus came through contact with infected animals or laboratory accidents in Wuhan, China. The investigation process, however, has been largely hindered, if not completely halted, in the past year due to “the CCP’s deadly obsession with secrecy and control.” With an urgent need for truth around the globe, the fact sheet hence highlighted three elements of suspicion around the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) and how closer inspection of the site could lead us closer to an answer:
Firstly, the U.S government now has reason to believe that several researchers within the WIV were the first cases of COVID-19. They became sick with COVID-19 symptoms in the autumn of 2019, months before the first officially identified cases in Wuhan. Contradictorily, the WIV senior researcher Shi Zhengli publicly claimed that there were “zero infection” within the entire WIV facility. However, the CCP has prevented any journalists, investigators, or health authorities from interviewing the staff and students at the WIV.
Secondly, evidence showed that since the virus RaTG13 (96.2% similar to the SARS-CoV-2 virus) was sampled from a cave in Yunnan China, the WIV has been conducting experiments on it since 2016. Meanwhile, the WIV also has a published record of “gain-of-function” research to engineering chimeric viruses. However, the WIV refused to disclose details on “gain-of-function” research work done on RaTG13. In fact, the WIV purposely removed its records of engineering deadlier version of RaTG13 online and hid it from the rest of the world.
Thirdly, despite its clear obligations to the Biological Weapons Convention, the CCP has never documented its biological weapons work. Yet intelligence revealed that the WIV has been conducting classified animal research on behalf of the Chinese military since 2017. As the U.S funded in the WIV for civilian research, if any of its funding has been diverted to Chinese military research. If ties between the COVID-19 virus and the WIV were unearthed, the U.S government has a right and obligation to know if such research projects serve any military purpose, as the WIV received funding from the U.S before for its civilian research.
Gain-of-function research is highly controversial as they experiment on existing viruses to understand if they could be modified to become more deadly or transmissible. This research aims to provide countermeasures for pandemics before it is too late – scientists engaged in such research argue that it enhances our ability to survey and monitor the spread of a deadly virus. If such a virus were to ever appear in the real world, we would be better prepared. Yet, the stakes of this research are high because deadly pathogens could escape from the lab, and the case of WIV wasn’t the first in China. There had been several cases of the outbreak in China before due to accidental infections in labs; although not causing a pandemic, the outbreak of SARS in 2004 infected nine and killed one. As the WIV eagerly removed its records of “gain-of-function” research of a highly similar virus strain to COVID-19 and further refused external access to its researchers and research records after the outbreak, more suspicions arise in the world with regard to whether the WIV was the primary culprit of the ongoing global pandemic.
Though little detail is known at the moment, we see growing hope for the truth and an answer as more and more whistleblowers clawed their way out of the CCP’s control and bravely revealed the darkest secrets of the WIV to the world. In particular, Dr.Li-Meng Yan, a Chinese virologist who worked in a virology lab under the University of Hong Kong, was the first to expose how the CCP and the WHO collaborated to conceal the early cases as well as the highly-transmissible nature of the virus. After fleeing to the U.S, she further published two research papers on how the COVID-19 virus is possibly engineered from existing RaTG13 virus strain in the WIV, providing sound scientific reasoning SARS-CoV-2 was made in a laboratory-controlled by the CCP for its military purpose. Now, the U.S. government has obtained further critical intelligence, such as the first unrecorded case of Covid-19 at a WIV facility, which may have come from a new informant source. We can expect more concrete evidence to roll out in the coming days, which could be the final nail in the coffin for the party.
This report also acts as a waking call for the skeptics who are busy debating whether the virus came from nature or the lab. I would argue that the urgency of a close inspection of the WIV has rendered this debate somewhat irrelevant. The fact sheet from the U.S Department of State has presented us with smoking-gun evidence of WIV’s cover-ups and demonstrated the WIV’s irrefutable role in spreading the virus. Based on current information, even if the COVID-19 virus originated from nature without laboratory engineering, the WIV is likely to have come across it in its gain-of-function research and refused to assist in its containment, or actively hid crucial information regarding the outbreak, which resulted in its exponential transmission. In retrospect, WIV’s spokesperson Shi Zhengli made false or misleading claims about the virus repeatedly, corroborated with the theorem above. Therefore, as the WIV is undeniably guilty in its approach of handling the pandemic, determining its extent of wrongdoing is now of the highest urgency.
As WHO investigators began their work in Wuhan, it is clear that they shall pursue three main objectives: to interview researchers within the WIV, to gain access on records of WIV’s work on the bat and other coronaviruses, and lastly to investigate the potential military purpose of such research. In fact, it is deemed a major dereliction of duty when WHO already failed to attain WIV’s gain-of-function research records on coronaviruses prior to the outbreak of this pandemic. If the investigators somehow end up empty-handed, again after one full year of delay, the credibility of WHO will indeed be compromised, which in turn reflects its deep-level corruption within. Fortunately, the current fact sheet acts as a direct message from the U.S Department of State that the U.S government will surely intervene if the WHO failed to deliver. After all, the world deserves the truth. It will not be long before the CCP is exposed and globally condemned for its evil deeds at the WIV. With patience and determination, we wait for the doomsday that the CCP deserves.
