Elon Musk, the oldest of three children, was born on June 28, 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa, to a Canadian mother and a South African father. His mother, Maye Musk, is currently a model and dietitian. Elon’s curiosity for the way the world works started at a very young age and was fostered by his great interest in books. Musk once stated that “you can learn anything on your own. You don’t really need schools.” Growing up, he was often bullied and teased for his passion to learn and educate himself through his love of reading. Even today, his introversions and socially awkward personality can be seen in his various public appearances.
Elon just recently became the world’s richest man, successfully surpassing Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon. This is largely credited to his modern innovations and technological advancements. Elon is not only an engineer, a businessman, and a founder of many great companies (like Tesla, The Boring Company, Neuralink Open AI, SpaceX and Starlink), he is also an exceptional artist who has mastered the Art of Science. A quintessential example of this is his vision of an open-source high-speed Hyperloop transportation system based on the concept of a vactrain. However, most importantly, he uses his god given talents to help humanity.
Starlink is a satellite internet constellation which provides satellite internet broadband access. It is a mass-produced small satellite orbiting the earth in low Earth Orbit (LEO) constructed by SpaceX. It combines with ground transceivers to send signals. The satellite system can be applied for military, scientific, or exploratory purposes. This system intends to provide internet connection and competitive pricing to underserve urban areas. It requires as many as 1600 small satellites to provide decent 5G broadband coverage. As of Oct 26, 2020, there are total of 895 satellites sent up by Elon. The ultimate goal is to send 42,000 satellites covering the global broadband network needs. The potential internet speed can reach around 1Gbps, 10 times faster than 4GLTE, but a little less than 5G, which reaches 8.5Gbps. However, we are confident Elon will be able to create a network that can reach speeds even faster than 5G.
In April, 2020, SpaceX decided to change the orbital to a lower altitude. They determined that low altitude orbit was closer to consumers, allowing the network to provide low latency broadband width on par service quality in rural areas.
The Starlink network is a very progressive, exhilarating, and technologically advanced network system that benefits underserved areas. Accompanying the praise it has received, it has also simultaneously drawn criticism from disparagers for its potential of light pollution and space debris. I am sure as technology advances, these potential pollution issues caused by new inventions will be thoroughly scrutinized and solved, and Elon will certainly be at the forefront of these innovations.
