01/11/2021 Pompeo: The Three Seas Initiative Bolsters Economic Security in a Region Targeted by China and Russia

Summary: Shibukedang

Summary

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) poses the central threat of our times, undermining the stability of the world to serve its own hegemonic ambitions. Dominated by General Secretary Xi Jinping, the CCP is expanding its economic and political power and influence at the expense of others.

Mike Pompeo, the Secretary of U.S. Department of State, tweeted on January 10th 2021 that “In Europe, we committed up to $1 billion through U.S. International Development Finance Corporation for the Three Seas Initiative. Strengthening energy, digital, and transportation infrastructure, bolstering economic security in a region targeted by Russia and China.”

From Wikipedia, the Three Seas Initiative, also known as the Baltic, Adriatic, Black Sea (BABS) Initiative, or simply the Three Seas, is a forum of twelve states in the European Union, along a north-south axis from the Baltic Sea to the Adriatic Sea and the Black Sea in Central and Eastern Europe. The Initiative aims to create an Intermarium-based regional dialogue on various questions affecting the member states.

In the same tweet, Mike Pompeo attached a speech video, he pointed out that “We have an opportunity to keep European nations strong, free, and aligned with the United States as my country wants them to be. A well-funded, action-oriented Three Seas Initiative will help achieve all of these shared goals”. Meanwhile, he emphasized the strategic and political effects of China and Russia, “the authoritarians in Moscow and Beijing are dangling infrastructure deals as a way to gain strategic and political leverage over free people. We’ve seen this with Nord Stream 2. We’ve seen the crushing effects of Chinese infrastructure deals around the world, from Laos to Montenegro and to Pakistan”. Nord Stream is a system of offshore natural gas pipelines from Russia to Germany. It includes two lines running from Vyborg to Lubmin near Greifswald forming original Nord Stream, and two lines under construction running from Ust-Luga to Lubmin termed Nord Stream 2

Finally, Mike Pompeo concluded, “The United states does not want to see authoritarian powers again compromise the sovereignty or liberty of our free-world friends.”

Video text:

Look, we’ve got real opportunities in front of us to improve the lives of our people. We must seize them. We have an opportunity to jump-start growth and attract private sector investment now, while raising living standards for the long term. Also, we have an opportunity to link together our infrastructure and energy markets in ways that will generate economic security for generations to come. That’s something that Deputy secretary Menezes will address later today.

We have an opportunity to keep European nations strong, free, and aligned with the United States as my country wants them to be. A well-funded, action-oriented Three Seas Initiative will help achieve all of these shared goals. Right now, as we sit here, the authoritarians in Moscow and Beijing are dangling infrastructure deals as a way to gain strategic and political leverage over free people. We’ve seen this with Nord Stream 2. We’ve seen the crushing effects of Chinese infrastructure deals around the world, from Laos to Montenegro and to Pakistan.

The Three Seas Initiative matters much more than it would have even five or ten years ago. It’s so much more important. The United states does not want to see authoritarian powers again compromise the sovereignty or liberty of our free-world friends.
