News of Chinese president Xi suffering from intracranial aneurysm and his plan to undergo treatment broke on Dec. 28th 2020, and it immediately caught media attention. Our previous report [1] reveals some background information on how this news leaked out, and its implications on the Chinese politics.

Now, further information regarding Xi’s surgery was reported on Lude’s daily live broadcast on Dec. 29 2020 [3]: in fact, Xi has been suffering from this condition for many years, and he already had several treatments. Xi’s last surgery was in 2012, before his ascension to power.
After he became the president, however, Xi had to keep postponing his treatment — due to the political challenges he faces from both within the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and the country he is supposed to lead, until now. Doctors warned him that if his condition is not treated within the next few weeks, he could collapse at any time.
A few hours after the news of his health issue appeared on social media, Xi had a phone call with Russian president Vladimir Putin. One main point in the phone call, revealed on Lude’s daily live cast on Dec. 29, 2020 [2], is quite intriguing, Xi pledged $30 billion to Putin, to be paid 20 days later, after his surgery, in exchange for Putin’s support for his regime while he is recovering from his surgery. Xi also told Putin to contact ‘Special Emergency Taskforce’ (SET) members for the fund, if he is no longer reachable. The SET members include trusted member of politburo and military, and his own brother Xi Yuanping who holds no official position in the government.
So it appears that Xi has made arrangements to maintain his grip on power, while he is away during surgery.
Sources also revealed to Lude that Xi has been suffering from hair loss due to mental stress and his health issues, and has to get hair implant to maintain his appearance [3].
Interestingly, Xi’s health issue is also one of the reasons he was chosen as the successor to Hu Jintao. This might seem counter-intuitive to people living in democratic countries, but the CCP is authoritarian regime and run by a completely different set of rules.
During the last few year of Hu Jintao era, Jiang Zemin (former leader, during 1989-2002) led a military coup and took control of Hu, and effectively became the real leader of the CCP. Before Hu’s term ends in 2012, Jiang started looking for a successor to Hu, preferably a puppet he can control, so he can continue pulling strings behind the curtain.
One of the most promising candidates is Bo Xilai (whose wife Gu Kailai, is reported to have murdered English businessman Neil Heywood [4]). However, Bo has a strong persona, which concerned Jiang that he might not be easy to control. Xi, on the other hand, with his relatively low-profile, along with health issues, appeared more manageable, and was eventually picked as the candidate for the next president.
During past 8 years, Xi is convinced that his health issues was not known to people outside his small circle of insiders, while in fact many people knew about it. Now that his health issue has become public, he has to do damage control, by reaffirming his alliance with Putin and other European leaders [5].
