• Secretary Mike Pompeo has ordered a review to determine whether China’s repression of ethnic Uighurs in Xinjiang amounts to genocide, several officials.
o Mr. Lu De says the U.S. will definitely conclude Communist China is responsible for genocide. But the question here is how to define and what the scope is. Who will be held accountable? China, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), or the Chinese government (Central government or local government)?
o Once the U.S. designates China’s treatment of the Uighurs and other ethnic minorities in Xinjiang as genocide, the 47 Member States of the UN Human Rights Council may all cut ties with the CCP.
• At a year-end meeting of the Central Committee Political Bureau, Xi Jinping described the challenges and pressures his administration had faced in 2020 as “heavy like Mount Tai”.
o During the meeting, Xi listened to the “mutual criticism” and “self-criticism” from each Politburo members.
o Mr. Lu De believes that most Politburo members have never agreed with Xi’s approaches; they just won’t share their thoughts in public. Xi attempted to observe who is on his side through the meeting.
o Mr. Lu De mocks that this conference must have eventually turned into a “butt-kissing” session.
• President Trump told his White House staff this week to ignore a previous memo about packing for departure from the White House.
o Until today, Kamala Harris is still in the Senate.
o All signs suggest President Trump is confident he will get re-elected and stay in the White House for another four years.
