Miles Guo released a raw and touching video about a Chinese girl who is in Year 3, lives with her grandmother and survives on eating potatoes. Before her grandmother’s birthday, the girl collects bottles to sell for meager amount of money so that she can buy new clothes for her grandmother.
This video is subtitled in English, you can watch this touching video here.
China under the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is no stranger in giving out foreign aids to other nations. In 2018, China created the China’s International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA). On CIDCA’s website, it made no secret that:
Since the 1950s, Chinese foreign aid has been influenced by and linked with China’s investment, trade, and foreign policy objectives.
- But if some of the Chinese citizens, such as the little girl in the video, are living in poverty, why is China providing aid to other nations instead of assisting its own people?
- Late November 2020, China President Xi Jinping claimed that he has “reached a major milestone in his five-year long fight to end absolute poverty across the country”. A CNN report repeated this talking point (clearly without fact-checking). Is the living condition of this girl in the video not considered an “absolute poverty”?
