Zhao Lijian, spokesman for the Chinese Communist Party’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on 19 March, “Whether they have five eyes or ten, if they dare to harm China’s sovereignty, security and development interests, beware of their eyes being poked out.”
The statement was directed at the “Five Eyes Alliance” countries, and the governments of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement on Hong Kong on Wednesday reiterating their serious concern over the Chinese Communist Party’s adoption of new rules to disqualify Hong Kong’s democratically elected legislators.
Last Wednesday, the Chinese Communist Party took action to suppress the last vestiges of democracy and dissent in Hong Kong. In a purge, the authorities deprived four pro-democracy members of the Hong Kong Legislative Council, Kwok Wing-kong, Kwok Ka-ki, Leung Kai-cheong, and Yeung Ngok-kiu, of their seats. Hours after the four were disqualified, the remaining 15 legislators from the pan-democratic camp said they would resign together.
The Chinese Communist Party expresses its strong dissatisfaction with and resolute opposition to the blatant violation of international law and the basic norms of international relations by the country concerned, as well as its criticism of Hong Kong affairs, which are the internal affairs of the Chinese Communist Party, Zhao Lijian said at the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Since Xi Jinping took power, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the CCP(MFA) has changed its strategy of biding its time and pursuing full-scale “wolf warriors” diplomacy. Continuously undermining the norms of international relations and making enemies everywhere, it became a veritable “Ministry of Sabotage of Sino-foreign Relations”.
“Many people would think today is a dark day. Let me say it’s not that hard,” said Kok Ka-ki, one of the four disqualified lawmakers. “As long as our resolve to fight for freedom, equality, and justice remains unchanged, the core values we hold dear will one day return.”
