Dozens of online media have signed a joint statement strongly opposing the Hong Kong Police’s unilateral screening of media organizations. Criticized this move as “backward and foolish” and stressed that “freedom of the press” is the cornerstone of Hong Kong’s success.
Apart from 8 media unions and organizations in Hong Kong, which strongly criticized the Hong Kong Police Force for restricting news coverage by journalists and seriously affecting the “freedom of reporting” and “press freedom”, dozens of online media also issued a joint statement, strongly opposing the unilateral screening of media organizations by the Hong Kong Police Force, and stating that they would continue to cover news and defend the “freedom of the press” guaranteed by the system and the law.
The statement said that “freedom of the press” is the cornerstone of Hong Kong’s success as an international community, and any form of censorship undermines “freedom of the press” and Hong Kong’s institutions.
The Hong Kong Journalists Association and other organizations have always had a legitimate and effective communication channel with the Hong Kong government. To exclude the online media is like taking Hong Kong “backwards” to decades ago. Removing the effective communication channels will only create confusion and controversy, criticizing the police for their “backward and foolish” approach, expressing dissatisfaction and protesting against the relevant practices, and opposing all practices of “screening the media” and “screening journalists”.
The Hong Kong police will amend the “media representatives” to restrict media journalists’ access to news coverage, no longer recognizing the Hong Kong Journalists Association and the Photojournalists Association press cards, and only recognizing media organizations under the press release system of the Hong Kong Government Information Services which is in a disguised “political selection” to enforce “press control”.
