TAIPEI (Taiwan) — U.S. Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Keith Krach arrived in Taiwan on Thursday afternoon (Sept. 17). Following U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar’s visit in August, Krach is the second high-ranking U.S. official to visit Taiwan in 2020.
At a regular press conference on Sept. 17, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin says, China firmly opposes this, has made solemn representations to the United States, and will respond as necessary in accordance with the development of the situation.
Nevertheless, after landing at the Shung Shan Air Force Base in Taipei, Krach was greeted by Director of the American Institute in Taiwan William Brent Christensen and officials from Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), and will attend Taiwan’s former President Lee Teng-hui’s memorial ceremony on Sept. 19.
