HK Sanction: Carrie Lam’s son left US; John Lee wants to arrest foreigners

According to Hong Kong news media, Carrie Lam’s younger son, who was attending Harvard University, has left the US abruptly.

Lam Yeuk-hei, pursuing a doctoral degree at Harvard, had not been contactable for several days at the end of July. He had told roommates that he returned to Hong Kong for a ”family emergency.”

The imposition of the Hong Kong National Security Law, in clear violation of the Sino-British Joint Declaration, has triggered global sanctions on Hong Kong and its officials. Eleven Hong Kong officials including Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam were on the US sanction list. Even though Carrie Lam said that she did not yearn for the United States, but her son who is studying at Harvard might not be able to step on US soil again.

Trump signed the “Hong Kong Autonomy Act” and an executive order on July 14 requiring the US government to terminate Hong Kong’s special trade status within 15 days and sanction officials and institutions participating in the Hong Kong version of the National Security Act.

On Aug 7th, the U.S. Treasury Department further targeted Carrie Lam, Chris Tang, Stephen Lo, John Lee Ka-chiu, Teresa Cheng, Erick Tsang, Xia Baolong, Zhang Xiaoming, Luo Huining, Zheng Yanxiong, and Eric Chan for undermining Hong Kong’s autonomy and restricting the freedom of expression or assembly of the citizens of Hong Kong.

“The United States stands with the people of Hong Kong and we will use our tools and authorities to target those undermining their autonomy,” said Secretary of the Treasury Steven T. Mnuchin.

Carrie Lam responded by saying that her visa to visit the United States will expire in 2026. “Since I don’t want to go to this country, I seem to be able to cancel it.” But she probably didn’t expect her immediate family members to be affected, according to news reports. Carrie Lam’s second son, Lin Yuexi, who is studying at Harvard, will probably never be able to enter the United States anymore and can only take courses online.

According to the sanctions, the sanctioned persons and their immediate family members will be prohibited from immigrating or entering the United States in the future.

Hong Kong’s investigative news agency “FactWire” reported on August 9 that it had sent someone to the United States to contact Lin Yuexi recently. Lin Yuexi’s landlord in the United States stated that Lin Yuexi had lost contact since July 25. And then told his roommate through Facebook that he returned to Hong Kong “for a family emergency”.

The report also pointed out that two days later, on the evening of July 27, the landlord received an email from Lin Yuexi, informing him that the lease would be renewed until August 31, 2021 (from September 1 this year to August 31, 2021). The landlord was also asked to send the lease to him. But he has been missing since then, and his whereabouts were unknown. The landlord stated that as of August 7th, Lin had not yet signed the lease for the next school year, and he contacted Lin several times without getting any reply. He received Lin’s August rent through a payment app.
