The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) voted on Thursday (Local time) to adopt a draft resolution entitled “Deterioration of the human rights situation in Ukraine stemming from Russian aggression.” With 33 votes in favor, two against, and 12 abstentions, the resolution calls for increased scrutiny of the human rights situation in Ukraine; in particular, to assess the nature and causes of  human rights violations or abuses and violations of international humanitarian law in Mariupol. Communist China and Eritrea voted against it.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said the latest findings from investigators in the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions were harrowing. She told members of the Human Rights Council that the bodies of thousands of civilians had been found in the Kyiv region alone. Some were killed in the hostilities, but others appear to have been summarily executed.

According to data from the United Nations High Commisioner for Refugees, since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war 6 million Ukrainians have taken refuge in neighboring countries, most of them flocking to Poland, followed by Hungary, Moldova, and Slovakia.

In addition, authorities estimate that millions of people have been displaced within Ukraine, and there are numerous reports of Ukrainians, including children, forcibly being sent to Russia.
