The coronavirus pandemic unveiled the American-style democracy’s “gorgeous robe”, revealing the “flea” crawling on it.
As of June 2, the United States has become the most severe country in the world with more than 1.8 million confirmed cases and more than 100,000 deaths. The U.S. government can only repeatedly change its forecast of deaths from 60,000 to 80,000, 90,000, 100,000…
In fact, as a superpower, the United States is known of “hard power against pandemic” in drug research and development, medical equipment manufacturing, and medical personnel. However, holding such good cards, some American politicians have been playing ridiculously poorly.
When the coronavirus pandemic struck, many Americans found that “the richest country in the world cannot give you a face mask.” Some medical staff have to wear shopping bags and garbage bags as protective gears.
In the early stage of the outbreak, certain American politicians ignored experts’ warnings and downplayed the threat of the epidemic: “The virus will one day disappear miraculously.” “The pandemic news is fake news”… Various rhetoric made many people believe this would be nothing more than just a “big flu”. At the same time, some members of Congress were exposed to sell their stocks before the stock market plunged due to the pandemic to seek their own interests. However, the coronavirus pandemic did not “miraculously disappear”. Instead, it quickly became a huge disaster in the U. S. Once they stood by and watched, now they can no longer keep themselves out of it.
Certain American politicians claim freedom of speech. But look at the fate of those who alerted the U.S. of the pandemic: Helen Y. Chu, an infectious disease expert at the University of Washington, issued a warning about coronavirus outbreak in January and was subsequently silenced. Her laboratory was ordered to stop testing in February; In early April, the captain of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, Brett Crozier, was relieved of command because he wrote a letter asking for help due to the coronavirus outbreak; In mid-May, Rick Bright, a senior health official in charge of vaccine development was fired because he insisted on his own opinion.
Certain American politicians claim that everyone is equal. But because of insufficient testing resources, “the rich first” has caused great controversy. They even responded “maybe this is life” when facing the press. In New York during the peak of the pandemic, the number of infected cases in the poorest two districts of Bronx and Queens was twice that of Manhattan, which has the highest population density. In Michigan, the number of Africa-American patients accounts for 40% of the total even though they are only 14% of local residents. More than 20,000 death was from senior homes and the number is still increasing…
As the most developed country in the world, the U.S. has always declared itself a “democratic beacon” and has spared no effort to export its American-style democracy throughout the world. However, from Iraq to Afghanistan, from Libya to Syria, what did the American democracy leave other than the smoke and the decay of the people’s livelihood? Political turmoil, terrorism, refugee wave, which one of those is not being fueled by American democracy?
As the only superpower in the world, the U.S. should have played its role by relying on its “hard power against the pandemic.” However, not only has it collapsed itself, but it has also frequently “scapegoating” to smear others and seriously undermined the overall global anti-pandemic cooperation. People can’t help but sigh at how the coronavirus is exposing the hypocrisy nature of American democracy.
