The United States Takes Lead in Evacuating Diplomats from Communist China Over Strict Epidemic Controls

WASHINGTON, Jan. 25 (Reuters) – The U.S. State Department is preparing to authorize U.S. diplomats and their families to leave Communist China as the U.S. government is unable to stop the Chinese communist authorities from taking intrusive CCP virus (Covid-19) control measures against them, sources told Reuters.

Two sources familiar with the issue said the U.S. Embassy sent the request to Washington for formal signature on Monday because in less than two weeks, Communist China will tighten Covid-19 controls ahead of the opening of the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Due to the sensitivity of the issue, the sources told Reuters on condition of anonymity that some embassy staff were upset that the U.S. government was unwilling or unable to protect U.S. officials from strict quarantine measures. These regulations include the possibility of being forced into Covid 19 fever clinics and being separated from children.

The U.S. State Department did not respond to repeated requests for comment, and it is unclear whether it has approved the embassy’s request.

An internal survey conducted by the U.S. Embassy showed that as many as 25 percent of staff and family members would choose to leave Communist China as soon as possible, one person said.

Home quarantine for diplomats should be a basic requirement, while access to Chinese fever clinics and hospitals should be voluntary, the person said, adding that the U.S. government should take retaliatory measures against such demands, but the U.S. did not.

The second source said that throughout the pandemic, the Embassy leadership failed to obtain proper assurances from Communist China for fair treatment of its diplomats.

In the early months of the outbreak, the U.S. government evacuated about 1,300 U.S. diplomats and family members from Communist China, and the two governments were deadlocked over officials’ testing and quarantine procedures for months.

In general, Communist China requires foreign diplomats to comply with its corona virus control rules same as the public do, including weeks of quarantine in a centralized government facility, with no freedom of movement for individuals.

As the opening of the Beijing Winter Olympics approaches on February 4, Communist China has rapidly stepped-up measures to stop further spread of the corona virus, despite of the continued outbreaks throughout the city.

On Tuesday, about 2 million residents of a district in Beijing began a new round of testing.

“The Global Times”, a Chinese nationalist mouthpiece, called the U.S. State Department’s consideration of the policy a “dirty trick” to disrupt China’s hosting of the Olympics.

The United States has led several allies and partners in a diplomatic boycott of the Games because it believes the Chinese government is committing genocide against Uyghurs and other Muslim groups in western Xinjiang.
