Recently, the Dutch media revealed that the CCP has heavily funded a human rights research program at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, questioning its influence on the university’s academic independence.
According to the Central News Agency, an article titled “China financiert onderzoek naar mensenrechten aan” (“Communist China finances human rights research program at the Free University of Amsterdam”) published on the Dutch Broadcasting Foundation (NOS) news website on the 19th. It has been revealed that the CCP Southwest University of Political Science and Law was funding the Intercultural Human Rights Center (CCHRC) set up by Vrije University Amsterdam during the period 2018 to 2020 for an annual amount of 250,000 to 300,000 euros (RMB 1.8 million to 2.16 million yuan).
According to the report, the CCHRC publishes academic journals and holds academic seminars with funding from the CCP, and justifies the CCP’s human rights violations and the ongoing genocide in Xinjiang on its official website, while promoting the CCP’s ideology of anti-West and anti-universal values.
Several Dutch scholars have said in interviews that Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam’s acceptance of funds from the CCP would compromise its academic independence. The university is suspected of rationalizing the crimes of human rights violation by the CCP.
Among them, Rob de Wijk, a professor of international relations at Leiden University, criticized CCHRC Director Tom Zwart for his frequent participation in the CCP’s academic conferences and interviews with the CCP’s official media. He believes it will induce the Chinese people to misunderstand Western universal values and help the CCP consolidate its authoritarian regime.
