Recently, the Dutch media disclosed that the CCP has greatly funded the human rights research program of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands, questioning its impact on the academic independence of the university.
According to the Central News Agency report, an article titled “China Financiert Onderzoek Naar Mensenrechten Aan” published on the news website of the Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS) on the 19th of January revealed that the Southwest University of Political Science and Law, in Communist China, was in during the period from 2018 to 2020, the annual funding of the Cross-Cultural Human Rights Centre (CCHRC), established by the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, amounted from 250,000 to 300,000 euros (RMB 1.8 million to 2.16 million).
The report pointed out that the CCHRC publishes academic journals and holds academic seminars with funds funded by the CCP and on its official website excuses the CCP’s human rights violations and the ongoing genocide in Xinjiang while promoting the CCP’s opinions, which is totally against the Universal Values in western countries.
Several Dutch scholars said in interviews that Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam’s behavior of accepting CCP’s funds would affect its academic independence, and they were suspected of rationalizing the Chinese Communist Party’s crimes of human rights violations.
Among them, Rob de Wijk, a professor of international relations at Leiden University in the Netherlands, criticized CCHRC director Tom Zwart for his frequent participation in CCP academic conferences and interviews with CCP official media, which he said would lead the Chinese people to misunderstand Western universal values and consolidate the CCP’s authoritarian regime.
The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam reportedly said it would end its cooperation with Communist China after its academic independence was widely doubted.
