On December 1st, U.S. Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth, attended a video conference of the CSIS (Center for Strategic and International Studies), one of Washington’s think tanks.  She stated that Diaoyu Islands, the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea are potential conflict points in the Indo-Pacific region.

Wormuth said that although the U.S. and Japan have a security treaty, Japan is still very concerned with the CCP’s intrusion on the Diaoyu Islands. The CCP’s frequent intrusion of Taiwan’s air defense identification zone has also attracted U.S. attention in the South China Sea as well. The U.S. actions may be misinterpreted, furthering tensions and may cause conflict. At the same time, she also emphasized that the United States should not underestimate the CCP’s challenge. The best way to avoid war in the Taiwan Strait is to ensure that the United States has a strong enough military presence to deter and prevent the CCP from invading Taiwan by force.
