Recently, the Biden administration of the United States once again expressed goodwill to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). On November 29, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian Affairs, Carmen G. Cantor, visited Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. The U.S. State Department emphasized in a statement on the same day that Cantor’s visit shows that the U.S. supports the “Indo-Pacific rules-based order” and will discuss human rights challenges with Southeast Asian countries to enhance ASEAN’s role in regional affairs governance and regional stability.
