On November 23, Republican Congresswoman Michelle Fischbach and Democratic Congressman Scott Peters introduced the Promoting Ties with Taiwan Act. The bill requires the Secretary of State to develop a strategy to help Taiwan set up representative offices worldwide, considering that the Chinese Communist Party has long pressured Taiwan’s friends.
Rep. Fischbach is proud of initiating the bill because Taiwan is a valuable friend and trading partner to the US. “I hope to see a cascade of new friendships for the Taiwanese founded on mutual respect and trade benefits,” she said.
The new bill, signed by additional 13 co-sponsors, is currently being reviewed by the US House Foreign Affairs Committee and needs to be approved by the committee and Congress before it can be signed into law by the president.
