The U.S., Japan, Australia, Germany, and Canada jointly conduct naval drills in the Philippine Sea off the southern coast of Japan from Nov 21 to Nov 30.

This maritime force exercise, known as ANNUALEX 2021, is a yearly naval training event led by Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). The exercise will include enhanced maritime communication tactics, anti-submarine warfare operations, air warfare operations, replenishments-at-sea, cross-deck flight operations and maritime interdiction maneuvers. ANNUALEX provides an opportunity to strategically coordinate, collaborate and further strengthen the network of partnership and alliances, enabling maritime superiority in the Indo-Pacific for participating naval forces.

German frigate FGS Bayern (F217) is currently on a deployment to the region and participating in the exercise. Vice Adm. Kay-Achim Schonbach, chief of the German Navy said, “The German navy will strengthen its commitment to the region through deeper security and defense cooperation with regional partners.” He further emphasized that Germany would seek to send a frigate every two years to the Indo-Pacific with a supply ship to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Last, it is worth noting that ANNUALEX 2021 marks the first time in 20 years that the German Navy is participating in maritime exercises in the region.
