The Biden administration has invited Taiwan to participate in a democracy summit next month, according to a list of participants released by the U.S. State Department on Tuesday (Nov. 23) local time, the Voice of America reported on Nov. 24.
According to reports, the Democracy Summit will be held by video on December 9 and 10. A total of 110 countries will be invited, including Taiwan. Communist China and Russia are not on the invitation list.
The Taiwan Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States issued a statement saying, “We thank the State Department for inviting Taiwan to the Democracy Summit, demonstrating the solid friendship between Taiwan and the United States and the importance of Taiwan as a partner in democracy.”
In February, in his first foreign policy address, President Biden announced plans to hold a democracy summit focused on preventing authoritarianism, addressing and combating corruption, and promoting respect for human rights. Biden said he would return the United States to a position of international leadership against the authoritarian forces dominated by Communist China and Russia.
