News from Deutsche Welle on October 18 that EU Labor Commissioner Nicholas Schmidt issued a warning on Sunday, October 17th, that heating costs have surged due to soaring energy prices. This winter, millions of households in Europe will not be able to afford heating costs, and the number of families falling into “energy poverty” may increase.
Schmidt said that the European Commission could help people in EU countries to limit the impact of high energy prices; the main action still depends on each EU country’s government. Germany slashed one-third of the tax on renewable energy last week, accounting for one-fifth of personal electricity costs. And France will also provide low-income households 100-euro heating subsidy.
