According to documents obtained by The Verge on October 25th, 2021, Facebook has an internal category which ranked countries into different tiers to give them different levels of priority in the company’s election interference campaigns. Based on those documents, the United States is at “Tier Zero” which receives the highest priority in Facebook’s election interference activities. Facebook even set up “war rooms” to monitor United States’s network activities in order to target specific local elections.
In addition to the United States, Germany, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, and Italy are placed in tier one and also received high attention. While another 22 nations are at tier two, and the rest of the world are ranked at tier 3 which received less attention. Those documents were acquired by The Verge from the US Congress, and resulted from an earlier legal battle and subsequent disclosure obtained through the Securities and Exchange Commission. Those documents reveal a dark and secret world inside Facebook which deviated from its self-proclaimed public mission of informing and serving the public interests.
Those harsh revelations came at a difficult time for Facebook, as the social media giant is facing increasing criticism from the public, damaging internal leaks, and has just recovered from one of the worst cyber-attacks in recent years. Just earlier this month, a whistleblower, Frances Haugen has accused the company of placing profit over the public good. She also revealed that Facebook has scrapped its civic integrity team after the 2020 presidential election. As the world learns more about the unethical behavior of Facebook and its subsidiary platforms, the need for a diverse range of clean and ethical new social media platforms is more urgent than ever before.
