A public welfare activity called “Workers’ Life Is Important” shared an online spreadsheet on the Github website to encourage employees in different industries in China to share their weekly work schedules. As of last Tuesday, the spreadsheet has received more than 10 million page views. There are currently more than 6,000 entries, including large technology and financial companies such as Tencent, Alibaba, and Bytedance.
The latest movement echoes the early efforts of tech employees to protest long hours of work. In 2019, a group of Chinese programmers called for the expulsion of startups accused of abusing employees and prohibiting the use of their open source code on GitHub.
