In a report by Taiwan News on October 21st, 2021, it states that Mr. Enes Kanter, Boston Celtics center, wore a pair of sneakers emblazoned with the words “Free Tibet” to an NBA game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, on Wednesday night (Oct. 20th), which led Chinese video-streaming platform Tencent to cut its broadcast.
Mr. Kanter, originally from Turkey, is a leading critic of Turkish President Recep Erdogan and has spoken out on a wide variety of human rights issues. Before the game, Kanter sent a message to the CCP’s General Secretary Xi Jinping on Twitter that night, writing “Dear Brutal Dictator XI JINPING and the Chinese Government: Tibet belongs to the Tibetan people.”
Meanwhile, in an accompanying video, Kanter wore a shirt with a photo of the Dalai Lama and said, “The Tibetan people’s basic rights and freedoms are non-existent. They’re not allowed to study and learn their own language and culture freely. The Tibetan people are not even allowed to worship freely…” Kanter expressed his strong condemnation of the CCP’s cultural extinction in Tibet and supported Tibet’s human rights.
