According to a news report by CNBC on October 21st, 2021, Huawei, the Chinese tech giant closely linked to the Chinese military and is currently blacklisted by the United States, has paid $500,000 to veteran Democratic lobbyist Tony Podesta to lobby the White House during the third quarter this year.
This disclosure comes at a sensitive time as the Biden administration is facing pressure to keep Huawei, who is accused of having violated American regulations in its financial transactions with Iran, on the trade blacklist based on national security concerns. To remain on the list or get delisted will impact Huawei’s access to semiconductors.
For years, Huawei has spent huge sums of money on lobbying.
In 2019, it spent over $2 million, targeting primarily the White House and the Department of Commerce among other agencies.
Last year, it spent $470,000 and so far this year it has spent over $1 million, including the $500,000 paid to Tony Podesta.
Tony Podesta, longtime Democratic lobbyist, known for his ties in the White House, registered to lobby for Huawei in July, targeting specifically the White House for “issues related to telecommunication services and impacted trade issues.”
