The Royal New Zealand Navy has announced that the frigate HMS Te Kaha has joined its military partners and will travel through the South China Sea to participate in a major international defense exercise.
The frigate will interact with the Royal Navy’s HMS Elizabeth aircraft carrier strike group in the Indo-Pacific region. The frigate will also participate in the “5 Nations Golden Jubilee Exercise 2021” in Singapore in October. The frigate has recently joined the British carrier strike group and has conducted exercises and training activities with carrier formations including the USS Carl Vinson and USS Ronald Reagan.
The Chinese Communist Party claims that the islands and reefs in the South China Sea have belonged to China since ancient times, and has claimed most of the waters, carrying out large-scale island reclamation and construction of military facilities. However, the International Maritime Tribunal has found that China’s claims to sovereignty over the South China Sea are “illegal”. The recent tensions in the Asia-Pacific region and the Taiwan Strait, and the frequent naval exercises in the South China Sea, are all practical actions to resist the Chinese Communist Party’s maritime hegemony.
