Russia’s three-day parliamentary election, the most important election before the presidential election in 2024, ended on September 19. The Central Election Commission said on September 20 that 40% of the counted votes indicated the United Russia party acquired 45% of the votes. The leader of the pro-Putin party announced that they won the majority of seats in the New Duma.
The Russian government recently announced the opposition leader Alexey Navalny’s political network as an “extremist organization” and barred his allies from participating in elections. Therefore, there is no real opposition participating in this election.
Additionally, there have been numerous reports of election irregularities reported. For instance, the ballot boxes at polling stations stuffed with ballots in advance and people voting multiple times. Election integrity was questionable. At this point, it is unknown how these irregularities will affect the final result.
