The USS Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group (VINCSG) is operating in the South China Sea for the first time in its 2021 deployment, the U.S. Navy’s Seventh Fleet said in a statement on September 8. Operations include fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft flight operations, maritime strike exercises, and coordinated tactical training between surface and air units.
Brig. Gen. Daniel Martin, commander of the carrier strike group, said it is important to maintain freedom of navigation for all nations in international waters, especially since nearly one-third of global maritime trade transits through South China Sea waters each year. The USS Carl Vinson is the first U.S. Navy carrier to deploy F-35C carrier-based fighter jets and CVM-22B Fish Hawk transport aircraft. She participated in the Large-Scale Global Exercise 2021 (LSGE21) in August, conducting interactive flights with the Royal Navy’s Carrier Strike Group Queen Elizabeth (CSG-21) and bilateral exercises with Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force units.
In addition, U.S. Marine Corps Commandant David Berger said on September 1 during an appearance at a Washington think tank, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, that for the first time in decades, the U.S. Marines must assume that the enemy will contest their supply lines from the Western Pacific all the way to the United States in an unprecedented attack and defense-in-depth. The U.S. Marine Corps, like the Navy, is planning to spread out its forces for operations, and the force still needs enhanced training in mobility and means of distribution to move personnel and supplies within the contested area.
Clearly, the U.S. military is on high alert for a potential confrontation or even conflict with the Communist China over the waters of the South China Sea and is also conducting a series of related deployments.
