Joel R. Kallman, the Oracle software engineer behind the Oracle APEX system and the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) v-safe After Vaccine Health Checker, passed away on May 25th. Although he was vaccinated on March 26, Oracle and mainstream media outlets have attributed his death to COVID-19.
Mr Kallman began his software developing career at Oracle in 1996. As the Senior Director and Vice President of Software Development for Oracle’s Server Technologies Division, he oversaw the development of the Oracle APEX system. APEX is an app development platform involving coding and computing architecture.
Under Mr Kallman’s supervision, the CDC partnered with Oracle APEX in March 2020 to develop the v-safe After Vaccine Health Checker.
Mr Kallman’s team created the post-vaccination monitoring system using the Oracle APEX low-code development tool, Oracle Analytics, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. The app is meant for COVID-19 vaccine recipients, who can voluntarily report side effects following their injection. Through the v-safe system, the CDC can contact and gather data from those who have experienced adverse reactions. Medical professionals can then use this data to inform their understanding for the treatment of different patients and populations.
