On June 9th, Kurt Campbell, White House coordinator for Indo-Pacific affairs, said in a conversation with Richard Fontaine, executive director of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), on National Security 2021 that as the world faces an epidemic and other challenges, the last thing people want is for the Taiwan Strait to be destabilized. The United States is seeking concerted action to ensure peace in the Taiwan Strait.
Meanwhile, Japanese media reported that after the U.S.-Japan summit issued a joint statement this April, military operations by the CCP’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to encroach on Taiwan have decreased significantly.
In response to the Taiwan issue, Campbell noted that the most important thing the United States can do is to adopt a comprehensive set of measures that seek to enhance deterrence and maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait so that the people of Taiwan can live and work in peace and security.
On May 4th, Defense News, a mainstream U.S. military media outlet, published an article entitled, “Eliminate Ambiguous Strategies on Taiwan or Risk Losing the U.S. in the Taiwan Strait.” Campbell also spoke on behalf of the White House at the time, saying, “It is in the best interest of the United States to maintain a ‘fuzzy strategy’ in the Taiwan Strait.” In just one month, Campbell’s judgment on the Taiwan Strait has changed so drastically, from a vague strategy to a competitive strategy that points at the CCP.
In addition to the alliance with Europe (EU and NATO), the U.S. government needs to strengthen the alliance with India, Australia, and Japan (Eyeless Alliance) to defend the Indo-Pacific region. The U.S. Department of Defense has also dispatched Army and Navy special forces to help train Taiwan’s national army, and plans to increase military deployment in Taiwan for a short period of time in order to deter the CCP, defend Taiwan’s security, and maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait region. Otherwise, the United States will lose its initiative in the Taiwan Strait region and the Asia-Pacific region, and even the Indo-Pacific region, and the CCP will replace the United States.
So, countering the CCP has become a necessity for the U.S. government.
