After 9 days of field visit in China, WHO releases Report of the WHO-China Joint Mission on Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) on February 26, 2020.
According to the report, the WHO team visited Beijing, Chengdu, Wuhan, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. The field visits include hospitals and clinics, transportation hub, and a wet market.
Regarding the origin of COVID-19, the report says:
“COVID-19 is a zoonotic virus. […] bats appear to be the reservoir of COVID-19 virus, but the intermediate host(s) has not yet been identified. However, three important areas of work are already underway in China to inform our understanding of the zoonotic origin of this outbreak.”
The report also praises China for its handling of the outbreak:
“In the face of a previously unknown virus, China has rolled out perhaps the most ambitious, agile and aggressive disease containment effort in history.
China’s bold approach to contain the rapid spread of this new respiratory pathogen has changed the course of a rapidly escalating and deadly epidemic.
China’s uncompromising and rigorous use of non-pharmaceutical measures to contain transmission of the COVID-19 virus in multiple settings provides vital lessons for the global response.”
