Until 2021 Feb 16th, there are 25 Chinese virologists among the Fellows of the American Academy of Microbiology as below：
Genhong Cheng（程根宏）、Shou-Wei Ding (丁守伟)、Pinghui Feng （冯平辉）Fu George Gao (高福）、Guangping Gao (高光坪）、Shou-Jiang Gao （高守疆）、Jianming Hu （胡建明）、Shibo Jiang (姜世勃）、Dong-Yan Jin (金冬雁）、Jake T Liang （連展阳）、Shan-Lu Liu （刘善虑）、Xiang-Jin Meng (孟祥金）、Jing-Hsiung James Ou (欧競雄）、Jianming Qiu （邱建明）、Feng Shao （邵峰）、Yiming Shao (邵一鸣) 、Peiyong Shi （史佩勇）、Zhengli Shi （石正丽）、Yi-Wei Tang (汤一苇）、Linfa Wang (王林发）、Yumei Wen (闻玉梅) 、Kwok-yung Yuen (袁国勇) 、Richard Zhao （赵玉琪）、Zhi-Ming Zheng （郑志明）、Wei-Shau Hu
Today let’s get to know about Shou-Jiang Gao （高守疆）.
Dr. Gao is a faculty member of the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology in the USC Keck School of Medicine. His laboratory is located at the Harlyne Norris Research Tower (NRT). Dr. Gao is a member of the USC Institute for Emerging Pathogens and Immune Diseases and a member of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer center. He is also a faculty member of the Programs in Biomedical and Biological Sciences (PIBBS) and Ph.D. Program in Medical Biology (MEDB).
PhD in Microbiology, University of Bordeaux (France), 1993
BS in Agronomy, South China Agricultural University (China), 1984
He was also invited to set up a domestic laboratory in Shantou University in China.
We can see he used to be one of the members in Academic Committee of Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, where famous bat woman Shi Zhengli works.
Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is a recently discovered virus that can cause malignant tumors such as Kaposi’s sarcoma. Dr. Shoujiang Gao of the University of Texas and Dr. Zhihong Hu of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, jointly applied for the “Molecular Mechanism of the Regulation of the Oncogenic Gene vIRF of Kaposi’s Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus”, which was awarded the 2003 National Outstanding Young Investigator’s Grant B. 2004 was the first year of implementation of this grant.
Dr. Shoujiang Gao returned to Wuhan Institute of Virology from October 11 to 18, 2004 to implement the 2004 National Outstanding Young Scientists Category B Project. He also attended the “2004 Symposium on Control of Emerging Viral Diseases” hosted by the Wuhan Institute of Virology and organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences on October 14-15.
The main research topic of the National Outstanding Young Scientists B Fund which Shou-Jiang Gao had took part in is “Molecular mechanism of the regulation of vIRF transcription of Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus oncogene“. This study will finely localize two cis-site Vac1 and Vac2, which are self-activated by vIRF, located within the promoter of vIRF gene; elucidate the molecular mechanism of vIRF auto-activation of its own promoter by studying the binding mode of vIRF to Vac1 and Vac2; identify KSHV or KSHV that is transcriptionally activated by vIRF through the action of similar cis-site with Vac1 and Vac2. cellular genes.
This study will reveal the molecular basis for the novel function of an important viral oncogene, vIRF, and may provide new information on the function of the cellular interferon regulator, cIRF. Also, the implementation of this study will improve the level and status of the Institute of Virus in the field of medical virology research.
So, no doubt, Shou-Jiang Gao（高守疆）was the Chinese Communist Party scientists linked to the People’s Liberation Army, trained in the PRC, who are working in the U.S like Shan-Lu Liu (刘善虑).
