Recently, more and more mainstream media have begun to report that the origin of the Covid-19 virus may come from Wuhan laboratory in China. As Donald Trump said in an interview last week: although many in this group are surprised by this development, “smart people” have known this for a while.
Incredibly, many major culprits in the media, such as The Washington Post and The New York Times, did not mention how they completely ruled out this possibility last year. Some people even blamed their dismissal on Donald Trump, saying that his government had too much false information and they didn’t trust anything of them.
Fortunately, some people in the media have seen through this scam and called on the media not to refute the truth for political and ideological reasons. This is correct.
This may further weaken the public’s trust in mainstream media, which has been in a state of free fall for the past few years.
In recent months, a Gallup poll found that only 9% of Americans “very trust” mass media, and only 31% “quite trust”. Most people believe that the mass media is not trustworthy, 27% said they “do not trust very much” and 33% said they have “zero trust”.
Similarly, research conducted by marketing company Edelman found that 58% of Americans believe that the media do not care about reporting the truth and are only interested in supporting their political positions or ideologies.
A robust and independent media is essential to democracy. At this point, the mainstream media is absent from this role.
