Uyghur Genocide: New Sanctions for Chinese Officials Part of U.S., Allies’ Response

Writer: Lois

The United States Treasury Department, European Union, United Kingdom and Canada enforced new sanctions for four Chinese officials involved in Uyghur Muslims’ abuse on Monday. The sanctioned individuals are Zhu Hailun, Wang Junzheng, Wang Mingshan and Chen Mingguo, all of whom are senior officials of northwestern Xinjiang, the Uyghurs’ native region.

The new sanctions cite human rights violations against ethnic minorities, including reports of torture and political brainwashing. Furthermore, the U.S. sanctions block all properties, interests and transactions affiliated with the sanctioned officials.

The EU’s sanctions target a further two CCP officials.

Australia and New Zealand have welcomed the sanctions but are yet to impose any of their own.

In a furious response, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) imposed sanctions on 10 EU officials. These individuals include German politician and chair of the European Parliament’s delegation for China relations Reinhard Butikofer and Adrian Zeno, an academic with research experience on China’s Xinjiang policies.

The CCP then accused Germany’s Mercator Institute of China Studies of harming the regime’s sovereignty as part of an attack on four entities.

Despite its angry retaliation, the communist regime’s foreign ministry urged the EU to withdraw its sanctions and warned Brussels to refrain from interfering in its internal affairs.
